A Circuit Court in Accra on Monday remanded into police custody a 50-year-old cobbler, Zakari Yahaya, for allegedly defiling a six-year-old girl.
Charged with defilement, Yahaya has pleaded not guilty before the court presided over by Mrs Georgina Mensah-Datsa.
Yahaya would re-appear on January 26.
Prosecuting, Police Inspector I.A.A. Ahor told the court that the complainant is the victim's father and a resident of Abelemkpe.
He said the accused, who also resides in Abelemkpe, usually bought drinks from the complainant's shop.
On January 17, this year, at about 10:30 hours, the accused and his friends met at the complainant's shop where they bought food and drinks.
The prosecutor said after enjoying themselves, friends of the accused departed leaving him behind.
Meanwhile, the victim and her friends were also playing around and the accused asked the other children to leave to their respective homes.
The victim, the prosecutor said, was left behind, and the accused then placed her on his lap, pulled his shorts, removed his penis and defiled her.
The prosecutor said a witness who spotted the accused defiling the victim raised the alarm.
The prosecution said the victim's pant was soaked with the sperm of the accused.
He was apprehended and handed over to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit at the Tesano Police Station who issued the victim with a medical form for examination and treatment.
