Ghana has shown greater commitment towards meeting the UN Millennium Development Goals compared to other West African countries.
This is the assessment of an interim sub-regional report on progress towards the attainment of the MDGs in the sub-region.
ECOWAS and the consulting group, Global South, have since last week been reviewing Ghana’s performance and the latest assessment projects and have concluded that Ghana is likely to meet most of the MDGs by 2015.
Clement Herve of Global South who led the assessment team said Ghana had put in place credible developments in each of the sectors and also managed to implement most of the contents of the plan.
That implementation of the plans was particularly commendable because in many developing nations, development plans are merely declaration of intentions “rather than actual guidelines for concrete implementation.”
He projects Ghana will achieve results by 2015.
Mr. Herve said, it “is not easy to attain all of the eight MDGs obviously because of funding issues with regards to the development strategies.”
He identified weaknesses of state institutions as well as the capacity to fully exploit natural resources as some challenges that Ghana must address.
