The Atwima Nwabiagya District Assembly in the Ashanti Region has outdoored over 100 portraits of President Mills and national flags to be distributed to schools and government institutions in the area.
The move is to reinforce an earlier directive by the District Chief Executive, Nana Asare Bediako, to compel heads of public institutions to hang the President’s portrait in their offices.
It followed suggestion by a primary school pupil who mentioned NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo in response to a question by then Regional Minister Kofi Opoku Manu.
At a launch in the district capital Nkawie, Nana Bediako said there is the need for Ghanaians, especially schools to learn from the past to promote nationalism.
He blames the high level of indiscipline in the country on what he believes is low priority on civic education in schools.
Nana Bediako says it is not surprising many Ghanaians including adults are unable to recite the national anthem and pledge.
“Indiscipline has become the order of the day, gone are the days where children are able to recite the national pledge and the anthems, the words in this song inspire every person and it makes it loving. It was rather unfortunate that pupils could not mention their current [president's name]. This scenario created a sense of shame in the country and the Ghana Education Service…..These portraits must be displayed boldly at schools to inform them that Prof. Mills is the President of Ghana” he stated.
Some Junior High School students at the programme appear to lend credence to the DCE’s assertion as they displayed ignorance of government ministers and other office holders.
The assembly also distributed desktop computers to over 50 schools and government institutions.
