70-year-old Ohene Asare, who finished the 12-kilometre run in 27 minutes in the “Olympic Day Run” received a special award from the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) on Saturday.
Seven-year-old Solomon Lartey, Prince Appiah and Gifty Neequaye were also honoured for completing the race in which more than 2,000 people participated.
Kassim Mohammed, Yusif Alhassan, Richard Nartey and Hayford Asante finished first, second, third and fourth respectively in the men’s category, while Mary Cofie, Millicent Quartey, Joyce Ankrah and Richlove Awuah also placed first, second, third and fourth in that order in the ladies division.
Mr Benson Tongo Baba, President of the GOC, who presented awards to deserving participants, urged Ghanaians to continue to demonstrate their support for the promotion of peace and stability in the country.
“By your participation, you have demonstrated your support in helping to promote peace and stability, which is important for the socio-economic development of the nation”, he said.
He commended the participants and advised them to take active interest in fitness exercises to keep them healthy at all times.
The event, a collaborative effort of the International Olympic Committee and the Ghana Olympic Committee was held in 203 other communities and locations worldwide.
The Accra event started from the Kawokudi Junction at Mamobi, through Nima and some principal streets of the city and ended at Mamobi.
It was sponsored by Vega Foods Ghana Limited with support from Voltic Mineral Water and The Coca Cola Bottling Company of Ghana Limited.
