The Ghana Maritime Authority says the recent deposit of tarballs at the Axim beach may have been discharged by some vessels transiting Ghana. The GMA and the Environmental Protection Agency have begun investigations into the discharge of the substances following some environmental concerns. Western Regional Head of the GMA Captain Kwabena Adu however tells Joy News it is in no position to sanction such recalcitrant seafarers even if they are arrested. That, he said, is because there is currently no law in Ghana under which vessels that discharge their waste in the country’s waters will be charged.
