President John Evans Atta Mills on Tuesday fulfilled his promise to follow protocol and not to shorten his salutations at public events, greeting virtually every identifiable person when he addressed the opening of the five-day conference of the Constitutional Review Commission in Accra.
Barely a fortnight ago, on February 17, when he presented to Parliament his State of the Nation address, a slip to greet the Chief Justice, Mrs Georgina Theodora Wood and former President J.A. Kufuor who were both in the august House left a nationwide trail of bitter arguments, with the Majority and Minority in Parliament still slugging it out over some residual misgivings.
On that occasion the president apologised profusely when his attention was drawn to the gaffe, pointing out that he had kept strictly to his prepared address and said perhaps it would be more appropriate next time not to shorten his salutations.
On February 17 he had greeted:
“Madam Speaker,
Vice President,
Honourable Members of the House” and proceeded to read his address.
On Tuesday however, President Mills had a longer list to acknowledge;
His Excellency Vice-President John Dramani Mahama,
Her Ladyship the Chief Justice,
His Excellency former President Jerry John Rawlings,
Members of the Diplomatic Corps,
Members of the Council of State,
Revered Traditional Leaders
Ministers of State,
Honourable Members of Parliament,
Service Chiefs,
Chair and Commissioners of the Constitution Review Commission,
Distinguished ladies and gentlemen.
Good Morning Fellow Ghanaians.”
