The National Blood Transfusion Service says it is putting in place strategies to encourage more young people to voluntarily donate blood.
As part of activities to mark World Blood Donors Day Tuesday, the service is inaugurating a club of young people who will pledge to donate blood 25 times before they turn 25 years.
Tetteh Carboo, Donor Service Manager of the National Blood Transfusion Service said the club will be made up of young people in their teens who will pledge to donate 25 times each before year 25.
“…If they start donating voluntarily when they are 17 or 18 by the time they are 25 they would have donated about 20 or 25 times.
“What it means is that we will get free blood from them; we will get safe blood, because research has shown that people who donate voluntarily live a better lifestyle than those who do not.
“…So at the end of the day we will have a pool of voluntary donors who will probably pass on the habit to people who are their own children or who are younger than them.”
