The Prestea Huni Valley District Hospital in the Western Region is in dire need of renovation, Joy Fm’s Western Regional Correspondent, Kweku Owusu Peprah reports.
Hospital authorities say the renovation would improve the health standards of patients and health personnel in the hospital.
Since its establishment in 1920, the Prestea Huni Valley District Hospital has not seen any proper refurbishment and everything in the hospital seems to be falling apart.
According to Kweku Owusu Peprah, persons who visited the hospital had to take their hospital files home and bring it back anytime they reported to the hospital since the hospital has no record department.
Due to the deplorable state of the hospital, Kweku Owusu Peprah warned: “If you ever have to be treated here, never visit the washroom.”
In an interview with Joy News, an administrator at the hospital, Mr. Felix Osei, said that counseling for pregnant women, which is supposed to be done privately, are done in the open, due to lack of medical facilities.
He added that pregnant women usually sit under scorching sun while they wait to see the doctor.
Confirming the situation, other personnel in the hospital also emphasised that the environment is not conducive for them, and that the hospital’s kitchen is just like a “death trap” for them.
There is no place to store “dangerous drugs” as the refrigerators in the hospital are not functioning properly, a pharmacist at the Prestea Huni Valley District Hospital, Mrs Abena Nkansah Prampah said.
Worst still, she said, the drugs are saved together.
