The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has called for a thorough auditing of the accounts of the University of Ghana to ensure accountability. According to the President of NUGS, Hamza Suhini, monies paid to the university authorities should be accounted for to enable everybody know exactly what the monies are used for. He argued that: “Before an increment is made, at least as student leaders, we should know that last year this was the amount of money pumped into the university activities. Unfortunately, this has not been done. Who knows if proper auditing is done, don’t be surprised that students may even have to be refunded with some money.” Hamza Suhini’s call coincided with a demonstration by university students, majority of whom are from the University of Ghana (UG), Wednesday to protest an "exorbitant" increment in UG's academic user fees, which the students say they cannot pay. The students said appeals for a downward review have been rejected by the authorities. Speaking to Frimpong Manso Adakabre on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM Wednesday, Hamza Suhini disclosed that all attempts to get the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana to reduce the fees have failed, and they have been left with no option than to hit the streets to demonstrate to the entire nation the challenges students in that particular university face. He however stated, “We expect an increment at the end of every academic year… but in this particular case, the increment is just unreasonable, it’s something that we have never experienced before and for that matter the University council should be more than willing to reduce it. As student leaders of this country, it behooves on us to explore all avenues in the interest of students that at the end of the day can lead to an appreciable decrement in the fees of the University of Ghana.” The NUGS President also took on the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof Ernest Aryeetey, whom the students said has been adamant, and has shown no sign of reducing the fees. Hamza Suhini said they would use the demonstration to portray to the public that the VC is not fit to head the University. “Most importantly once again we will showcase the posture of the Vice chancellor of the University of Ghana and ignite the debate whether such a personality should be at the helm of affairs, especially when it comes to the students’ fraternity,” Hamza said.
