About four million Ghanaians have hepatitis, a survey conducted by the Pharmaceutical Council of Ghana has revealed. The survey also reveals that 16 percent of pregnant women screened at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and Efia Nkwanta Hospital have the chronic form of the disease.Speaking on Joy Midday News, a member of the Pharmaceutical Council of Ghana, Dr. Steven Corquaye, said sexual contact is not the only mode of transmission of the disease as many believe. He said early screening could prevent the rapid damage to the liver.
According to Dr. Corquaye, the most common way of transmission is from mother to child. Also unprotected sex and people with multiple sexual partners are more likely to acquire the disease, he added. He, however, advised that sharp edged equipments like nail clippers, tattoo machinery among others should be well sterilized before use.
