Chief Psychiatrist, Dr. Akwasi Osei is advocating the enactment of a law to regulate alcohol use in the country. He wants such a law to prevent, especially, young people from drinking alcohol. According to him, alcohol and tobacco are major contributors of mental illness in Ghana especially among the youth. Dr. Osei made the suggestion in a speech read on his behalf at the commemoration of this year’s World Mental Health Day in Accra. The President of the Ghana Mental Health Association, Rev. King Godson Akpalu, called for the establishment of Mental Health Fund to support healthcare delivery for the mental patients. He described as alarming the rate at which “vibrant youth are becoming addictive to drug, and as such cannot contribute meaningfully to the nation’s productivity.” Former Chief Psychiatric, Dr. Joseph Bediako Asare told Asempa News there must be an expansion of health care facilities to manage and treat mental illness. He said the state of healthcare delivery is very poor, quoting a WHO report which stated that the treatment gap for mental health patient in Ghana is about 98 per cent. “So it is only two per cent of the population that are receiving adequate mental healthcare; this calls for expansion of services.” He suggested that more satellites facilities should be provided at the community level.
