The newly elected national executives of the People’s National Convention (PNC) have been charged to hit the ground running by speeding up negotiations with the Convention People’s Party (CPP).The new leadership has up to April 15, 2012 to report back to the National Executive Committee of the PNC on the way forward for the merger talks.Dr Sule Gariba, Chairman of the just ended national delegates congress held in Sunyani, announced this as one of the resolutions adopted at the congress.Interestingly, the congress of the PNC was on the theme: “A United PNC for Victory in 2012.”The two Nkrumaist parties started the unity talks a couple of years ago but to no success yet as both parties took entrenched positions, and the talks inundated with counter accusations and mistrust.“In the light of the resurgence of our shared legacy in dignifying Ghanaians, mindful of the desires of our general leadership, as well as grassroots calls to speed-up the process of unity or alliance with CPP, and urged on by millions of our supporters worldwide,” Dr Sule gariba read.“This congress hereby mandates the elected leadership of the party to resume the discussions towards this unity process with the CPP, and to present a report of options by April 15, 2012.”The merger talks took a different turn when the daughter of Ghana’s first president and chairman of the CPP, Samia Nkrumah, appealed to the PNC to return to the negotiation table for “sincere” talks.Delivering a solidarity message on behalf of the CPP at the PNC’s Congress, she said a united Nkrumaist front would be able to unseat the National Democratic Congress in the December polls, noting that “we have a common destiny to transform Ghana”. “Just last week, I was in Ethiopia to unveil the statue of our great father and founder Dr Kwame Nkrumah and this is a confirmation that (political) emancipation is still essential and possible today,” she said.
