NPP MP for Assin north constituency, Kennedy Agyapong has described the overthrow of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as a mixed blessing.Kennedy Agyapong said Dr. Nkrumah’s achievements in terms of developmental projects and his vast knowledge in governance cannot be over emphasized."That is what I like about the man. He is selfless based on the projects he executed in his era". Dr. Nkrumah is a great man’, Ken Agyapong said on Adom Fm’s Dwaso Nsem.Today, Friday the 24th February marked the 46th anniversary of the overthrow of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. In the early hours of 24 February, 1966, Ghana's armed forces, with the cooperation of the National Police, took over government in "Operation Cold Chop”.The late Brigadier Akwasi Amankwah Afrifa led a group of military and police officers to overthrow Dr. Nkrumah.But the Assin north MP cited the Tema motorway and the Akosombo Hydro- electric power as one of the best projects the country has ever had and all credit to Dr. Nkrumah.He however said his only problem with Dr. Nkrumah is his socialism concept which had made Ghanaians over reliant on government.He stressed that Dr. Nkrumah’s ideas are excellent, but the socialism foundation made it difficult for successive governments to meet the needs of the people.He noted that former President Rawlings re-echoed the socialism concept which to him should not have been repeated.He underscored the need to have national wealth spread across board as the concept of Dr. Nkrumah.However, the Deputy Propaganda Secertary for the ruling NDC, Solomon Nkansah said Dr. Nkrumah’s economic policies used then, were the best and added, “the ideas were not meant to be static”.He condemned detractors who after overthrowing Dr. Nkrumah destroyed his policies and projects.The Deputy Propaganda Secretary stressed that the overthrow of Dr. Nkrumah cannot be justified because no government had performed well than Dr. Nkrumah.
