She would have wished to lie by her husband as she had done throughout their one-year marriage, but things are not what they were. And the bed on which her husband Kwadwo Asare Baffour Acheampong known as KABA lay cannot accommodate the two of them.
They will have to make their beds separately as is the case of divorced couples. But that thought rips her heart and sends violent ripples through her body. Her pain is nameless but those who have experienced that kind of loss are best placed to name it.
Mrs Valentina Acheampong had to shuffle between standing and sitting at the funeral because her husband’s new home is too tormenting to stay still. And the presence of the casket that carried the remains of her husband worsened her pain.
She writhed in pain when she asked the question that will remain seared in the heart of mourners.
“What should I tell Nana Yaa when she asks of Dada?” Valentina asked in her emotionally-filled tribute to her late husband.
She didn’t ask the question because she didn’t have befitting answers but that the vacuum left by her late husband is irreplaceable.
“You made fatherhood effortless and a sight to behold…you made me the happiest woman,” she let out.
The task bestowed on her by the demise of KABA is herculean but Valentina has accepted the challenge.
But there is one thing she asked of her husband: Can you promise me you will pray for us?
Though they were married for a year, the memories that stand between them cannot easily be thrown away.
Not even death!!
“I can't believe you are gone but I take consolation in the fact that you are in the bossom of our Lord. I am glad you knew the Lord," she said.
Days after they marked their milestone, Valentina is surrounded by people who wore a haggard and mournful look – people whose words let out mournful sounds.
But she exuded hope because she realized that the only thing that death fears is a man or woman who does not fear death. Valentina doesn't because it is an earthly custom.
“But I take consolation in the word of God in the Bible in your favorite book Philippians 4:19 which says…and my God shall supply all my needs according to His riches in Glory by Christ Jesus,” she said.
Their daughter, Nana Yaa has a lot to learn from the two.
“I will teach her to memorize Philippians 4:19 [and] I will tell her what a wonderful father and husband you were,” she said.
