Central Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwamena Duncan, says President Mills' reign has significantly been marked by corruption, lies and unparalleled economic hardships rather than his acclaimed unprecedented achievements.
The president told journalists in the United States that he was confident Ghanaians will give him a second chance in office because they have witnessed "the unprecedented achievements" of his government in just three years.
Some opposition parties have mocked the president's claims. Leader and Founder of the Progressive People's Party (PPP), Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom, said Mills’ achievement was second best to those in the 4th Republic much less the achievement of Ghana’s First President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. Policy Analyst and a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwaku Kwarteng, also admonished the president to look beyond the fine macro-economic figures and ensure those figures have a direct relation with growth in other sectors of the economy to be meaningful to Ghanaians.
However, Mr Kwamena Duncan - commenting on the issue during a discussion on Peace FM's Kokrokoo Wednesday - stated the president was in no position to claim unprecedented achievements with his government's mediocre performance so far.
He further explained that there was nothing Mills had achieved today that has not been achieved before - for example, Mr Duncan claimed a former military regime (NLC) reduced inflation to as low as 3.1 per cent. Again he said president John Agyekum Kufuor achieved a GDP growth of 8.4 per cent without oil revenues.
What seemed a novelty in the political history of Ghana, Duncan said, was the situation where the nation's wealth was fraudulently distributed to party cronies in the guise of judgment debts payment.
And yet Mills is talking about unprecedented achievements? The NPP Central Regional Secretary quizzed.
"...There is nothing unprecedented except the Waterville-Woyome payments, except indeed the level of inefficiency...ineptitude, the level of corruption that has characterised this government," he maintained.
