Communications Director of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), Nii Armah Akomfra has chided the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for seeking to undermine the mass Biometric registration process which kicks off Saturday. According to Nii Akomfra,the NPP‘s allegations of supposed gerrymandering by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) could affect the integrity of the voters' register ahead of the December polls. The Electoral Commission (EC) has dispatched its officers and required materials needed for the exercise to all districts across the country to begin the Biometric registration. The exercise is to replace the existing voters' register and by implication nullify previous ID cards. But the NPP has raised red flags over the exercise alleging a plan by the government to manipulate the process to secure a second-term mandate in the December general elections. The largest opposition party has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of plotting to bus people to registration centers, register minors as well as prevent NPP supporters from registering in tomorrow’s exercise. But the NDC has denied the allegation, describing them as unfounded which must be treated with the contempt it deserves. On Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Friday, Nii Armah Akomfra urged the NPP to direct its concerns to the appropriate authority rather than “causing fear and panic” to court public sympathy. He said the NPP should stop the petty politicking and dialogue with the EC for the smooth implementation of the process. “This should not be a matter that we are going to sit in radio stations and talk about. It is a matter of sitting down and finding solutions as a country. It is not in anybody’s interest that this thing fails, it [Biometric registration] must succeed”. Nii Armah Akomfra noted that the Biometric register could be a panacea to disputed election results hence nothing should be done to derail the system. Notwithstanding, the CPP scribe admonished the government not to treat the NPP's allegations with kids gloves but provide a level playing field to all political parties to avert any pandemonium in future. On the CPP’s preparation for the exercise on Saturday, Nii Akomfra said his party has trained agents in the various constituencies to monitor the exercise. He stated that the CPP would abide by all the ground rules outlined by the EC to ensure a violence-free exercise. Nii Armah Akomfrah asked all Ghanaians who have attained the prescribed voting age of 18 to endeavour to register when the biometric voters registration takes off. However, in a quick rebuttal, a Deputy Communication Director of the NPP, John Boadu, also a panelist on the programme, disagreed with Nii Akomfra. He explained that the NPP has ample evidence to substantiate their claims - therefore as a responsible opposition party, they owe it a duty to Ghanaians to protest against the machinations of the ruling party. John Boadu said their position is only to ensure that the right things are done. It is not to destroy the process as being suggested, he said.
