The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Asikuma-Odobeng-Brakwa, Paul Collins Appiah Ofori, has cast doubts about a victory for the NPP as the party retained Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as running mate.P.C. maintains that Dr. Bawumia was insignificant to the NPP ticket in the 2008 general elections after he failed to win the needed votes from the northern regions especially in his [Bawumia] own constituency in Walewale.The Asikuma-Odobeng-Brakwa MP’s outburst was in reaction to a unanimous decision by the party’s National Council of Elders to approve Dr. Bawumia's nomination as running mate for the NPP flag-bearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Thursday.The official announcement which coincided with Nana Addo's 68th birthday was met with jubilation from party supporters who pledged their unflinching support for the ticket to ensure a resounding victory in December.But P.C. Appiah Ofori on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Thursday said Dr. Bawumia as a technocrat would have been a better candidate for the Governor of the Bank of Ghana position given his economics expertise and not as a vice presidential candidate of the NPP.He wondered why the NPP would choose someone whose entire family hold key positions in the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) as its vice presidential candidate when in fact the party has equally competent people to hold the position.Mr. Appiah Ofori was skeptical about Dr. Bawumia’s ability to convince his mother who he alleged is a Women's Organizer of the ruling party, and other siblings who play key roles in the ruling party to vote for the NPP.Notwithstanding, the NPP apparatchik indicated that the party’s decision is final hence would abide by it and campaign for the ticket.He indicated that given the present circumstance, Dr. Bawumia must reconcile with his family up north and campaign assiduously to haul in the necessary votes for the NPP in the three Northern regions.P.C Appiah Ofori said the renowned economist must use the second chance offered him as an opportunity to prove critics wrong by complementing Nana Akufo-Addo's efforts in the December 7 polls.However, pollster and Managing Editor for the Daily Dispatch newspaper, Ben Ephson debunked P.C. Appiah Ofori’s claims that the NPP lost the 2008 elections because Dr. Bawumia failed to bring any votes to the NPP ticket.He explained that the pair won the first round of elections but lost in the run-off, therefore Dr. Bawumia cannot be blamed for the opposition party’s defeat.Ben Ephson cautioned that “the sins of the fathers should not be visited on their sons”.
