A Deputy Communication Director of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover has blamed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Paul Tawiah Quaye for the violence that characterized the first phase of the ongoing biometric registration exercise.According to Titus, the failure on the part of the IGP to beef up security especially at violence-prone polling stations gave some hooligans the leeway to perpetrate violence which disrupted the exercise.Titus Glover’s comment comes after the IGP had held a close door meeting with officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) Tuesday to review security provisions at the various polling centres to prevent a recurrence of such incidents to ensure a successful exercise. There have been numerous media reports of pockets of violence in the first ten days of the biometric registration exercise. Some EC registration officials are said to have been receiving death threats from unknown persons who believe their interest are not being served. Many have blamed the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the NPP who allegedly employed macho men to intimidate electorate in their strongholds nationwide.Despite assurance by the police to beef up security at the polling centres as EC prepares to kick start the second phase of the exercise, it is still unclear whether the NDC/NPP would comply with the security rules. However, speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday, Titus Glover said the NPP has no confidence in the IGP to do an objective work in the provision of adequate security at the various polling centres.“Some of us in the NPP are not happy sometimes about the way he [the IGP]does his things. He has a performance deficiency” he added. He said all the clashes and brutalities at the polling stations especially in the strongholds of the NPP during the registration exercise happened in the full glare of the police.Titus Glover urged the IGP to be proactive about the security of the country since the onus lies on him to ensure peaceful elections in December. But a member of government’s communication team, Fred Agbenyo blamed political parties for making unsubstantiated allegations in the media just to incite their supporters in other regions to retaliate in equal measure. He stated that a smooth biometric exercise requires the collaboration among the EC, political parties and key stakeholders to address the few human and technical challenges associated withe excercise.Fred Agbenyo advised the EC to step up media education about the process to avoid further irregularities.
