The Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Jake Obetsebi Lamptey has described as lies the litany of issues raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at its press conference held on Wednesday in the wake of Ken Agyapong’s utterances. The press conference addressed by the General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, he stated that the recent infamous ethnocentric comments made by the Member of Parliament for Assin North, Kennedy Agyapong, should be seen as “another stage in the planning and implementation of an orchestrated and well-rehearsed agenda of the NPP to throw this nation into chaos as a result of their inordinate ambition for power.”Asiedu Nketiah said the NPP has a history which is “deeply rooted in the politics of ethnicity.”He said the NPP has ignored efforts by leaders such as Kwame Nkrumah to bring all the ethnic groups together, adding that the NPP “both in theory and in practice [have] not weaned [themselves] off this canker of ethnicity.”Asiedu Nketiah, aka General Mosquito, noted “It is no wonder that the UP tradition in all its history has never fielded a non-Akan as their presidential prime ministerial candidate.”Mr. Asiedu-Nketsia stressed that despite all the hitches that have bedeviled the ongoing biometric registration exercise, the process has so far seen "marked improvement in terms of security breaches as compared to the 2008 exercise,” adding “those who care for the truth could check the facts for themselves.”However, in a response to the NDC's press conference, NPP’s Jake Obetsebi Lamptey in an interview with Joy News bemoaned what he said is a deliberate misrepresentation and lies which has characterized the way the NDC conducts its public utterances.“The NDC has decided to label the NPP as an 'Akan' party, and they are going to look for all sorts of ways in which to continue do that labeling, so they come out with all sorts of tags. If we are to go into a thing of slanging of who said what and what, we have a whole list of different ethnic slurs that has emanated from the lips of NDC operatives. But at the end of the day what they do is just continue to being tribalistic.”The NPP Chairman said the NDC’s tagging of the NPP as an “Akan” party is just an endorsement of tribalism and divisive politics by the NDC.Obetsebi Lamptey stated that the NPP traces its foundation to the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) which they describe as a party formed by people from diverse ethnic background. He said the NPP’s foundation is a nationalist one and said the fact remains unchallenged.
