Women’s right advocacy group, Women in Law and Development in Africa (WiLDAF) is asking the Electoral Commission and political parties to ensure a certain number of the newly created constituencies are dedicated to only female parliamentary aspirants. National Programme Co-ordinator of WiLDAF, Bernice Sam told Joy News Television in an interview such an arrangement will ensure certain number of women get elected to Parliament. She explained though governments have over the years shown goodwill towards the whole debate about affirmative action, little had been done to concretize it. She expressed worry over “lip service” paid by political party leaders saying it is the reason for the dwindling number of women in the decision making process. Bernice Sam spoke on the sidelines of a new campaign launched to support female candidates contesting the December Parliamentary polls. The Executive Director of Gender Planning Consult, Joana Opare who launched the campaign urged Ghanaians to vote on “accountability and development”. The campaign is set to roll in 30 districts across the 10 Regions of Ghana and activities would be directed in areas where women are contesting as Members of Parliament.
