The Eastern Regional Youth Organizer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Frank Annoh-Dompreh is calling on the Electoral Commission of Ghana to give the various political parties the opportunity to campaign at prison yards.
Annoh-Dompreh said the decision by the EC to register prison inmates and subsequently give them the opportunity to vote requires political parties to be given the opportunity to campaign to inmates.
He noted that even though the constitution is not clear whether political parties should be given the platform to campaign in prisons it will be incumbent on the EC to institute measures that would enable political parties to canvass for votes in the prison.
He added that for security reasons it will not be prudent to do full scale political activities but because they are going to be registered and have limited access to public information and policies in the country, it will be necessary to allow political parties to reach out to them on their manifesto and policies, in order to make informed choices in the elections.
Mr. Annoh-Dompreh added that if the rules are not clear, the government of the day would determine the activities at the prison and may go against the other political parties.
He made these observations in an interview with Adom FM correspondent Maxwell Kudekor over the weekend at the Abetifi constituency, after a youth forum for some selected communities.
The EC will on Tuesday, 29th May, 2012 begin a registration exercise in prisons across the country to enable inmates exercise their franchise in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections on December 7.
In line with this, all prison yards in the country will have a polling station.
