Frank Lampard will go for a scan on Thursday after suffering a thigh injury in training on Wednesday morning.
The midfielder only joined up with the England squad for the first time on Tuesday after playing in Chelsea's Champions League final win over Bayern Munich on May 19.
But already it appears that his Euro 2012 campaign is in doubt, with Jordan Henderson placed on standby once more.
England have already been forced to withdraw one midfielder in Gareth Barry through injury, with Phil Jagielka named as his replacement.
Lampard enjoyed a renaissance under interim boss Roberto Di Matteo at Chelsea in the second half of last season and helped the Blues lift the Champions League for the first time.
It helped to cement his place in the England squad for Poland and Ukraine after a season that began amid doubts over Lampard's continuing effectiveness at the very highest level.
Yet, if Wednesday's injury setback does rule him out of Euro 2012, it could be that Lampard has played his last major tournament for England as he turns 34 in June.
The former West Ham player had ceased to become a regular part of the England side under Fabio Capello.
He has started only one of the past five internationals and looked to have slipped down the pecking order even when Jack Wilshere and Steven Gerrard were injured.
But Lampard is still regarded as an important squad member and, if he is forced out, his experience will be sorely missed.
Henderson made his only England start against France - who will be the opponents in the Euro opener on June 11 - in November 2010.
