The much anticipated registration of prisoners for the biometric voters’ register ended successfully Tuesday evening. A little over a hundred prisoners out of an estimated thirteen thousand prisoner population from 43 prisons across the country availed themselves for the exercise. At the Nsawam Prisons where over 100 prisoners were expected to register, the exercise was delayed by about an hour and a half. The exercise thus started at 9:30am instead of the scheduled 8am. The first applicant at the male prison finished his registration at 9:45am. A total of 11 female prisoners availed themselves for the registration exercise having successfully met the full requirements of the Electoral Commission. The registration at the female prison thus ended within four hours. The story was however different at the male prison which still had a long queue as of 7pm. As at 8:55pm, over 120 male prisoners had been registered with quite a sizeable number yet to be captured. The Electoral Commission suspended the registration of prisoners after concerns were raised over the eligibility and capacity of the prisoners to meet the requirements for the registration process. Speaking to Joy News Television, the Principal Director of Public Affairs at the Electoral Commission, Sylvia Annor, expressed her satisfaction with the exercise stressing that the EC had done enough to ensure no inmate is disenfranchised. The Chief Public Relations Officer of the Prisons Service, ASP Courage Atsem told Joy News Television, the service was satisfied with the turn of events. Alhaji Alhasan Abdulai, Regional Coordinator of the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) was also full of praise for the EC and the Prisons Service for how the exercise was organized and advised inmates to regard themselves as citizens of the country. The exercise at the Nsawam Prisons was generally peaceful and orderly devoid of any violence or controversy.
