The New Patriotic Party flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed his profound condolences to families of the fatal plane crash in Accra, on Saturday. Ten people were confirmed dead after a Boeing 727-200 operated by Nigerian cargo airline, Allied Air overshot the runway of the Kotoka International Airport, run into the streets and tore a 207 Benz Bus into shred killing all passengers aboard the bus. The crew on the aircraft, however, survived the crash. The airplane overshot its runway, broke into the wall that fences the airport and skidded onto the main road that links the 37 station to La and its adjoining suburbs. It mangled a taxi cab and killed a soldier who riding a motorbike. The driver of the taxi cab survived the accident. The accident attracted widespread sympathies with both the president and his vice, Prof John Mills and John Mahama, respectively, paying visits to the scene of the accident and expressing their sympathies to the families of the deceased. The NPP flagbearer who was out of Accra decided to return and see at firsthand what actually happened and to commiserate with the bereaved families. “I was out of Accra and I was shocked by it. I felt so sorry for the people on the bus. They must have been terrified to have such a huge object descending on them. “It’s a tragedy,” he added. He applauded government for the steps it has taken to get to the bottom of the accident and agreed with suggestions that the international airports be decentralized. “I am glad to see that already the government has acted and has established a committee to look into the circumstances of this matter. “Let’s just wait and see the outcome of it but in the meantime all our main concern has to be directed at the families of those who lost their lives in this tragedy and do whatever we can to comfort and strengthen them." He said it will not be out of place to get more than one international airport to ease the pressure on the Kotoka International Airport. Meanwhile, a government delegation including Transport Minister, Collins Dauda, Defence Minister JH Smith and officials of the Nigerian High Commission is paying visits to bereaved families. Joy News’ Anny Osabutey who was part of the delegation said they have been to the home of the late George Osei, driver of the 207 bus who lost his life in the incident. He said family members are still in shock and drowned in tears. Officials are yet to announce any settlement plans for the bereaved families. A five man delegation has been inaugurated to investigate the cause of the accident.
