Hundreds of mourners and sympathizers including, family members, government officials, bigwigs from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and constituency executives on Wednesday converged at the Tema Community 9 cemetery to bid farewell to Wulensi MP, Alhaji Saani Iddi.
Alhaji Iddi passed away on Monday at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after a short illness and per Muslim custom, was buried the next day.
The burial service lasted for about an hour; the late MP’s body was neatly wrapped in a white cloth and covered with a rug inscribed with Islamic symbols and after some prayers led by Deputy Imam of Ashaiman, Sheikh Mustapha Haruna, he was buried in a fresh dug out grave.
Former Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, Communications Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, NPP running mate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and MP for Bimbilla, Dominic Nitiwul were among the mourners at the cemetery and they all spoke fondly of Alhaji Iddi.
Alhaji Aliu Mahama said he was shocked at the news of the late MP’s death.
“I didn’t know about his sickness; I just came back from an overseas trip last week only to hear about his death.”
He described Hon Iddi as a very good man and politician and added that his legacy will not be forgotten.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in a solemn mood, promised that the NPP will ensure that his family is taken care of.
“We have to continue to honour his good works and his family. We pray for his salvation for him to be in heaven as we also pray for our lives on earth,” he said.
Some NPP executives who also spoke to Adom News said Alhaji Iddi’s loss is a big blow to the party although he was voted into Parliament as an independent candidate in the 2008 elections.
Haruna Iddrisu and Dominic Nitiwul also expressed their sadness at his passing, saying they will miss him.
The final funeral rites will be held three days after the burial according to Muslim custom.
