The Ashanti Regional Police Command has mounted a search for a businessman at Asawasi in Kumasi who is said to be the owner of some guns and ammunition seized by the security agencies Thursday.
The cache was intercepted by officials of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority.
It was concealed in sacks of cola nut onboard an Ivorian-registered articulated truck.
Nine AK 47 assault rifles, one pistol and 281 pieces of live ammunition have so far been retrieved from the cargo which was impounded at Ahwiankwanta upon a tip-off.
Meanwhile information available to Luv News indicates the cache was to be delivered to the businessman, whose name is being withheld for now.
Regional Minister, Dr. Kwaku Agyemang Prempeh, who chairs the Regional Security Council, said the development is worrying especially as the election approaches.
Regional Police Commander, DCOP Augustine Gyenning assured the public that personnel in the region are adequately prepared to ensure safety before, during and after the December polls.
Meanwhile, security officials in the Upper East Region are also hunting for persons suspected to be behind recent clashes in the two upper East Region towns - Namoo and Tindongo.
Twenty-six people were arrested on Wednesday following a joint police-military swoop in the two towns where three people died in a bloodbath in a dispute over land.
Regional Police Commander DCOP Bright Oduro told Joy News most of the people on the run now fled during the swoop.
