The National Commission on Small Arms is worried about increasing reports of illegal arms being smuggled into the country.
The Commission fears selfish individuals may take advantage of volatile situations, including chieftaincy disputes and the upcoming elections to foment trouble.
Security officials in recent times have intercepted quite a number of arms being transported from one end of the country to the other and security experts say the trend is becoming a matter of concern.
Chairman of the Ghana National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, Jones Applerh, said he is confident that security officials can deal with the situation but stressed they need the cooperation of the public.
“If you live in a country where it’s very easy for people to access weapons…weapons that are used in prosecuting war, then as an agency obviously we will be worried…
“One thing about security in Africa that we need to address, if you create what we call a pipeline then anything can pass through; human trafficking, illegal migration, narcotics, guns,” he stated.
The Small Arms Commission chairman added: “So long as we have the kind of borders we have, it will always be a challenge to properly do effective manning of our borders.”
He maintained that “the way forward is vigilance of the people” and said that “this is what is going to save us for now.”
