The Director of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) has been sacked, Joy News has learnt.
William Akwasi Appiah was sacked Thursday in the heat of the arrest, detention and subsequent release on bail of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Deputy General Secretary Koku Anyidoho, by the Police CID and officers of the BNI.
National Security Minister Albert Kan Dapaah later told Joy News Mr Akwasi Appiah has only been reassigned to National Security.
The reasons for the reassignment of Mr Appiah are unclear, even though it is believed to be related to the Koku Anyidoho case.
Sources say the Directorship of William Akwasi Appiah at the BNI has been suspect. He was appointed under the previous administration.
Last year the sacked BNI Director signed a statement accusing the then Deputy Agric Minister nominee as a drug suspect.
On the basis of that statement, the NDC Minority demanded from the government not to confirm Mr George Oduro as Deputy Minister because he was a drug dealer.
It turned out the information was inaccurate. The drug suspect, George Kwame Oduro only had a name similar to that of the Deputy minister nominee at the time.
Thursday’s dismissal may also have been linked to the visit to Mr Koku Anyidoho by ex-president John Mahama and other ex-government appointees.
The ex-president and his team took pictures with Mr Anyidoho during the visit; pictures which later went viral on social and mainstream media.
For such security installations, electronic gadgets are not allowed in let alone to take pictures for distribution on social media.
It is believed that security breach may have been the reason for the dismissal of Mr Appiah even though no official reason has been given.
One Ambassador Rashid Seidu Inusah has been asked to take over as acting director of the BNI.
The following is the statement from the government, reassigning the BNI Director.
