The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has said the provision of free Senior High School education is not an antidote to the numerous challenges in the education sector.Nii Armah Akomfrah, Director of Communications, said a CPP government will rather ensure the expansion of the basic level of education to include SHS.According to him the present situation where only 25% of pupils are able to progress to the SHS level is alarming and truncates the future possibilities of the pupils.He added that the problems of structure, environment , standards, facilities plaguing the education sector were such that both the governments of the NPP and NDC had no solutions to them.Nii Armah Akomfrah, and Dr. Kweku Osafo, Chairman of the CPP’s Manifesto Planning Committee were discussing the party’s manifesto on the Joy FM's Super Morning Show, Monday.According to Dr. Kweku Osafo, there is the need for a total social transformation of the country which has so many bad sectors which have been stagnant.Dr. Osafo, said the CPP will embark on a social transformation agenda that will prioritize modernisation of the educational sector and with more innovations that would drive the growth of the economy.According to him, there is an avoidable expenditure in the public sector and the civil service such as salaries for non-existent workers, purchase of luxury vehicles amongst other needless expenditure that have to be re-channelled into the educational sector.Mr Akomfrah added that using $200 million to revolutionarize the education sector should not be too much for the country to bear.Dr. Osafo blamed the shortfall of personnel in the education sector to the overthrow of Nkrumah’s regime which he said led to the neglect of a key component of the education process - the training of sufficient teachers.He said there was the need to build more training colleges and also equip the existing universities to train teachers for all the levels of education.Dr. Osafo said modernizing education had to be done with Information and Communication Technology as the bedrock which must be imbued in the students right from the kindergarten level.
