An NGO has launched a campaign to protect girls rights at the Accra High School in the Greater Accra region.
The aim of A2Z firm movement (NGO) towards this project is to support vulnerable teenage mothers to further their education and improve their economic value.
“We are aimed at empowering girls to peacefully stand and speak for their rights and to also inculcate in them the spirit of entrepreneurship through series of activities under the girls’ rights support club”, Felix Agbeko Gbuule, Founder of the NGO says.
“As it stands, a significant number of girls become pregnant, while they should be in school. Most of these teenage girls are poor and vulnerable, lacking a good education, shelter, food, and healthcare.
“We believe that an empowered girl means an empowered nation which means an empowered generation. Hence the project “Protect Girls’ Rights”.
This project falls in line with SDG 5 which is, achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls.
The project has a life span of seven years. Phase one of the project is to form Girls’ Rights Support Clubs (GRSC) in senior high schools and the slogan of the club is “my right is my pride”.
There were free distribution of branded exercise books to the pupil of the school. Students also received products from sponsors as part of the activities for the day.
Mr. Emmanuel Kobina Baidoo who is the headmaster encouraged students to see the importance of protecting girls’ rights.
Phase two is a campaign through the electronic media to speak against child marriage, female genital mutilation, rape and other related issues to girl’s rights. The theme to this is dubbed “speak to protect girls’ rights.
Phase three is an innovative activity dubbed “kick to protect girls’ rights” which is a football gala among communities.
