Ghana has been adjudged the best African country in terms of media freedom across the world.
Out of a total of 180 countries surveyed in the 2018 World Press Freedom Index, the West African country placed 23rd ahead of Namibia, South Africa and Cape Verde who placed 26th, 28th and 29th respectively.
The four were the only African countries ranked among the top 30 countries deemed to be enjoying a relatively free media with Norway Sweden and Netherlands believed to be the best countries with a free media.
The worst are Eritrea and North Korea which placed 179 and 180 respectively.
Despite the modest success in the push for media freedom in Ghana, at least 45% Ghanaians would rather the media is controlled by the government.
On whether the media in Ghana has played its role effectively as a watchdog of government, 75% of the respondents in the Afrobarometer survey believe the media has been effective.
The report from the survey was released ahead of the World Press Freedom Day marked in Ghana.
