Amin Amidu Sulemani, the Upper West Regional Minister, has given the police and other agencies two weeks to complete the removal of unauthorized speed ramps in his jurisdiction.
These ramps are usually constructed by regional committee members and people living in local communities in order to protect community members and livestock from speeding cars.
Some roadside vendors also construct them next to their wares in order to force potential customers to slow down.
What concerns the Minister the most is that these ramps, which number in the dozens along some stretches of highway, are often shoddily constructed.
Although they are often intended to protect life, they have caused a number of traffic fatalities.
In ordering their removal, Sulemani also urged drivers to obey speed limits and other road regulations to minimize car accidents and the resultant injuries and fatalities.
