Some residents of Salaga constituency in the East Gonja district of the Northern region are angry with the Electoral Commission (EC) for attempts to disenfranchise them. The East Gonja Civil Society Association which is fighting to get the residents registered has given the EC a one-week ultimatum to capture them in the voters register. The group’s spokesperson Mohammad Taha was however silent on their next line of action if the EC fails to act on their demand. He told Joy FM’s Top Story Thursday: “We still want to keep that one to ourselves. As for the next action, it will only crop up after the issue has not been resolved. We would keep that to ourselves, we wouldn’t want to share that.” He however said there is “no anxiety or tension” in the community. “Our aim is not to create chaos; we want the people to be registered, that is our ultimate aim,” Mohammad Taha promised. Early on, the Executive Secretary of the association Abdul Aziz Seidu Jawala told the media an estimated 7000 residents were not registered by the EC because of logistical and distance challenges. Meanwhile, the EC is in the final stages of finalizing the register for the December polls. He blamed the District EC officer for their predicament. Meanwhile, the East Gonja EC office has confirmed the concerns of the residents to Joy News but has disputed the number of people affected. East Gonja EC officer David Acheampong puts the figure around 1000. He said he is ready to register them if he gets directive from Accra. “It is beyond me, I cannot just get up and do anything I wish today.” Meanwhile, information available to Joy News indicates that the EC’s national head office has been briefed on the situation in the East Gonja but was yet to respond to their plight.
