The opposition New Patriotic Party has suspended the ongoing nationwide vetting of parliamentary aspirants for the 45 constituencies in the Ashanti and Bono Ahafo regions.
Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NPP, Samuel Payn, told Joy News the executive have not been able to scrutinize the nomination forms of the aspirants.
He said the party was occupied with the recent tour of the region by its flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo, and did not get ample time to go through the submitted documents, for proper background checks of the aspirants.
Samuel Pyne was however hopeful that vetting in the Ashanti region will come off tomorrow morning.
In the Eastern region, Skyy FM’s Kuuku Abban told Joy News regional executive have cancelled the vetting there for similar reasons.
He said the executive intend to carry out a comprehensive examination of the forms submitted by the 20 aspirants to select credible ones for primaries on October 14.
Vetting of aspirants in the other eight regions is however ongoing in regional capitals across the country.
NPP’s Director of Research and Elections, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah tells Joy News they hope to clear those qualified for the primaries next week by the close of day today.
He said over 150 people have picked forms to contest the 45 constituencies: about 80% of the aspirants are persons who contested and lost the party’s last primaries.
