President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday embarked on a campaign tour of the northern parts of the Volta Region with the assurance that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would not make vain promises.He said: “All the promises that we made in the past have been achieved and every community has enjoyed its share of development projects, and will therefore not engage in promises that cannot be fulfilled.”President Mahama, who addressed separate rallies at Have, Golokpita, Hohoe, Jasikan, Kadjebi and Nkwanta, said the performance of the NDC government had impressed Ghanaians who were yearning to retain them in power in December.The tour of northern Volta is the last lap of the campaign tour of the entire region which begun last week in Juapong, Ho, Kpetoe, Aflao, Keta among other towns of the region.President Mahama said government would strengthen education at the basic levels to continue to improve on the standards that had enjoyed some measure of improvement since 2009 adding, “We will do everything step by step to ensure that everybody enjoys quality education in the coming years.”“The provision of free education at the Senior High School level is meaningless if the basic level, which is the foundation, is weak. If the children are not able to make it to the Senior High level, how can they benefit from the free education?”He explained that apart from the Nkrumah regime that established three public Universities, the NDC government had been instrumental in the establishment of the University of Mines in Tarkwa, University of Education, Winneba, University for Development Studies in Tamale, Wa and Navrongo and currently the new Universities in the Volta and Brong Ahafo Regions.President Mahama promised that apart from the Eastern Corridor road that was passing through the Volta Region, government had awarded a number of feeder roads in the region on contract to facilitate the carting of foodstuff from rural areas to commercial centres.In all the communities he visited, the chiefs appealed to government for motorable roads, potable water, health facilities among other development projects to enhance their standard of living.
