Former deputy Managing Director of Metro TV, Haruna Alhassan is facing a law suit challenging his eligibility to contest the Bawku Central seat.Mr. Alhassan won primaries following the incarceration of the incumbent MP Adamu Daramani whose nationality was questioned. Now two persons Bukari Yabodo and Zidabu Musah, residents of Bawku, are in the Supreme Court seeking to have Haruna Alhassan disqualified. They also claimed Mr Alhassan, among others, does not hail from the area. The two have therefore sued him together with the Electoral Commission and the Attorney General.Lawyer for the plaintiffs, Richard Atta Keelson who confirmed the suit to Joy News said the plaintiffs are resident of Bawku Central Municipality, “and indeed they have evidence to prove that he hails from Burkina Faso, the other side, not even from Ghana in the first place; so they are prepared to prove this in court.”He denied that the suit was purported to foil Mr Alhassan’s attempt to go to Parliament, stating that every qualified Ghana has a right to contest a parliamentary election. But Haruna Alhassan said the first time of hearing about the suit brought against him was on radio, precisely on Joy FM, and described the action as “funny”.He suspected that his political opponents are behind the suit, and said “it is a sign of desperation from someone who is about to lose” an election.Though Mr Alhassan admitted that he was born in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, he maintained that “my root is there (Bawku)” with some relatives across the border in Burkina Faso.
