The Millennium Villages Project (MVP) is pursuing measures for sustained progress in improving the lot of people in beneficiary communities. National Partnerships Coordinator, Dr. Joseph Homiah Mensah, believes successes made under the project in reducing poverty can be replicated in other communities. The project is in its final stages of implementation; having transformed the lives of thousands nine deprived communities in the Amansie East District of the Ashanti Region. The Millennium Villages Project has greatly enhanced access to healthcare, food production and transportation in the beneficiary communities. Various stakeholders are making a strong case for measures to ensure the gains are not reversed after the project ends in 2015. Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Kwaku Agyeman Mensah, wants people in the nine beneficiary communities to be involved in the decision making so they can take over. Dr. Homiah Mensah tells Luv News plans are already in place to make this a reality. According to him, natives of beneficiary communities have already being involved in the decision making processes of the project. The assembly has also been involved since the inception with the planning and the areas to tackle in order to make the MVP a success. A major threat to the sustainability of the project however is the activities of illegal mining in neighboring Amansie West District. Dr. Homiah Mensah believes the way out is to legalize and properly regulate illegal mining. He thinks the people should be helped to take advantage of the mineral wealth on their land whiles preserving the environment.
