Parliamentary candidates of the People’s National Convention (PNC) contesting this year’s elections are leading a campaign to remove the party’s presidential candidate, Hassan Ayariga, from the party with the election only two weeks away.
The candidates have begun collecting signatures to petition the National Executive Committee of the party to remove Ayariga. The 94 parliamentary candidates say they no longer have confidence in Ayariga, whom they accuse of working against the party and its parliamentary aspirants.
The party’s parliamentary candidate for Tamale Central constituency, Salifu Iddrisu, is leading the campaign against the flagbearer and is confident that Ayariga will be successfully ousted.
Ayariga has also incurred the wrath of some party executives, who accuse him of being an appendage of the NDC after his performance at the IEA debate on Wednesday.
The executives called on the party’s National Executive Committee to rebuke Ayariga, but General Secretary Bernard Monah says there will be no such action since the case being made by the aggrieved executives had no merit.
Meanwhile, the party’s council of elders is set to hold an emergency meeting today in a desperate attempt to resolve the crisis.
