The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has denied media reports that a group of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters last Friday attempted to prevent President John Mahama’s convoy from entering the Eastern Region town of Kyebi, the hometown of NPP flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo.Speaking to Radio Ghana, NDC General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketiah said that as some NDC supporters there had set up their stands at the Kyebi rally venue, some NPP supporters reportedly confronted them. The President had not yet arrived in town at that time, he added.There were also reports of clashes between party supporters in which NDC flags and posters were torn down.Upon arriving in the town, Mahama called on the Okyehene Amoatia Ofori Panin at his Palace to confer with him.Nketiah explained that Mahama’s comments about the unrest, which he issued at the palace of the Okyehene, were actually about this confrontation.He said that the Okyehene and other chiefs of the Abuakwa Traditional Area had distanced Okyeman from any rowdiness.Reacting to the Kyebi incident, NPP Deputy Director of Communications Yaw Buabeng Asamoah accused the president of overreacting.He said that NPP flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo’s commitment to peace is unshakeable.Asamoah also hinted that the NPP has written to the police asking them to meet all eight presidential aspirants and their campaign teams for a briefing about security plans for the election.Meanwhile, President Mahama has appealed to the people of Kyebi to exercise restraint and political tolerance at all times.He noted that as a home of democracy, its residents should be able to coexist in spite of diverse political inclinations.Radio Ghana’s correspondent reported that in spite of any apparent clashes, the President received a rousing welcome in Kyebi.
