New Patriotic Party (NPP) member and Abuakwa South MP Samuel Atta Akyea has condemned what he says is an attempt by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to portray his presidential candidate as a warmonger. Atta Akyea was reacting to claims that NPP activists prevented President John Mahama's convoy from entering Kyebi, the hometown of the NPP flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo, for a weekend rally. According to media reports, a youth group said to be members of the NPP blocked the road as the President’s convoy approached the township, resulting in clashes between them and NDC supporters. However, a statement signed by NDC General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia reported the President was not prevented from entering Kyebi although other party supporters apparently had trouble reaching the venue for the programme. On Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Atta Akyea accused the NDC of orchestrating violence prior to the president’s visit in Kyebi, which he said the NDC wanted to pin on the NPP in light of Nana Addo’s infamous “all-die-be-die” comment. He alleged that NDC thugs, led by one Alhaji Salisu Mohammed, attacked NPP members, injuring some of them. The Abuakwa South MP noted that the party has made a formal complaint at the Kyebi police station to investigate the matter. He called it regrettable that people misconstrue a comment by the NPP flagbearer to score political points, adding that the NDC appears desperate to retain power. Atta Akyea called Nana Addo’s commitment to peace irrevocable, assuring the public that the flagbearer will carefully protect the country's peace and tranquility. He added that while NPP members stand for peace, they will not allow themselves to be intimidated or cheated by any political party in the December polls. Atta Akyea stressed that the NPP has no desire foment trouble in Akyem Abuakwa ahead of the election and that the NDC should therefore put an end to their propaganda and work towards unity.
