A group calling itself the Coalition of Women against Drug Addiction (COWAD) is pushing for the mandatory disclosure Presidential Candidates' medical status including the results of their toxicology tests.
According to COWAD, the move would “help secure the future of our children and grandchildren because then they may not be looking up to our leaders and be picking bad habits from them.”
While commending the Progressive People’s Party Candidate Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom for voluntarily submitting himself to a medical examination and making the results public, COWAD noted that “the usage or non-usage of drugs by political leaders have greater influence on the youth and their indulgence in the act.”
“We will encourage all other presidential candidates to follow the significant example by Dr. Nduom to undergo a medical examination and publish the results," said a statement issued by COWAD Chairperson Madam Felicity Akua Asare.
She added that the group hopes "that toxicology is included on the list of the examination which must be mandatory.”
The group urged "politicians not to sweep under the carpet public requests for toxicology tests by all Presidential and Parliamentary candidates.”
Meanwhile, COWAD has expressed “dissatisfaction at attempts by some political leaders, most especially the NPP leader Nana Akufo-Addo, to swerve any question on the fight against the drug trade and usage in Ghana.”
The group claimed to be particularly concerned with Akufo-Addo because "a critical analysis of the NPP manifesto revealed no concrete solution to the [drug] menace."
