Voters in the Nadowli-Kaleo constituency in the Upper West Region are said to be casting ballots in spite of a breakdown of the verification machine.
This report was confirmed by electoral officer Emmanuel Dabuo in a Joy News interview.
The move violates the “no verification, no vote” directive issued by Electoral Commissioner Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, which categorically prohibits constituents from casting ballots without first being recognized as registered voters by a biometric verification machine.
Apparently, the verification machine in the constituency was working perfectly until the batteries ran out. When the batteries were replaced with fresh ones, the machine would not function properly.
A Joy news correspondent reported that the polling agents of the political parties conferred and agreed that voting would continue without verification until the machine is repaired or replaced.
Over 35,000 voters are expected to cast their ballots in the constituency, where Health Minister Alban Bagbin is running to retain his parliamentary seat.
