While voting was delayed at many polling centres because electoral materials arrived late, the Redeemer School in the Anyaa/Sowutuom constituency had another problem. When the materials arrived late at 8:15, there were no Electoral Commission officials present to take charge of the materials.
The Returning Officer was therefore compelled to take back the materials, leaving voters frustrated after queuing for several hours, myjoyonline.com was told. Some had been waiting since Thursday midnight.
Voting started a few minutes after 11am. The presiding officer there, Linda Prempeh, told myjoyonline.com that the polling station only became operation once the returning officer had visited a variety of other polling stations to assemble a team of officials.
Her story was corroborated by the party agents there - the NDC, NPP and PNC -, as well as Abdallah Shaibu, the Assembly member for Sowutuom Electoral Area.
By 1:50pm, only 187 people had voted out of 705 in the EC’s register. Voting was going smoothly when myjoyonline.com visited the centre.
However, we learnt that after waiting for several hours without any votes being cast, some people felt that the situation was becoming unbearable and they started causing confusion. If not for the timely intervention of a combined team of security personnel, the situation could have escalated to something more serious.
A few of the peeved voters were reported to have left the polling station in anger.
