Nana Akufo-Addo, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the recent elections, has urged party supporters to remain calm as party leadership tries to settle its complaints of electoral fraud through legitimate channels.
Addressing concerned supporters who were calling for a vote recount while sang war songs at his residence at Nima, Mr. Akufo-Addo assured them that he would see to it that the situation was resolved. As a first step, he reported, the NPP National Executive Committee would meet to decide on the way forward.
Speaking to the media earlier, NPP legal team member Nana Asante Bediatuo hinted that the party would seek legal redress for the alleged widespread fraud that contributed to President John Mahama’s election.
He explained that party members had found discrepancies in vote totals recorded at polling stations and those released by collation centres, suggesting that in some cases Akufo-Addo’s vote count had been reduced while Mahama’s had been increased.
He reported that the party had amassed significant evidence and that its National Executive Committee would meet today to make a final decision on whether to pursue the case in court.
Citing specific examples, Nana Bediatuo said that in the Tamale South Constituency, the 37,832 votes recorded for President Mahama on polling station red sheets had been inflated to 53,536, an increase of 15,704.
In Lower Manya Krobo, he said, Mahama’s 23,520 recorded votes increased by 6,663 to 30,183, while in Yilo Krobo, 21,772 votes for Mahama were inflated by 7,528 to 29,300.
In Berekum West, where Nana Akufo-Addo received a total of 10,539 votes from the various polling stations, he reported that the numbers were reduced during collation to 7,750, meaning that the NPP candidate lost 2,789 votes to fraud in that constituency.
