The Convention People’s Party has rubbished claims it is a dead party following a disappointing performance in the 2012 general elections which saw the party’s presidential candidate Dr Abu Sakara garner only 20,323 votes representing 0.18 per cent.
The party also lost its only seat in Parliament- Jomoro Constituency- where the daughter of Ghana’s first president Samia Nkrumah won in 2008.
The results have left many political analysts wondering if there is any realistic hope for the party that won independence for Ghana to move from political obscurity to political limelight.
But the party officials are undaunted.
Spokesperson Nii Armah Akomfrah told Joy News’ Samson Lardy Ayenini the poor performance was rather “a wake-up call” for the party.
He said the CPP is just going through a period of renewal, adding it put up young and dynamic candidates who have learnt their lessons from the past elections and will put up a good performance in 2016.
When he was asked what reasons accounted for the abysmal performance by the party, Nii Akomfrah blamed the voting patterns of Ghanaians.
He explained whilst the campaign itself was issue driven, the votes were not based on issues, adding, other candidates were squeezed out by the two political parties.
