Traders in Accra have expressed worry over attacks at some trading centres, particularly the Central Business District, following the December 7 General Elections.Aggrieved NPP supporters in Accra and other parts of the country have been protesting the declaration of John Mahama as President-elect by Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan.They claim that the results were rigged to favour the incumbent and that their candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, actually won the elections.On Thursday, a group of about 15 persons allegedly attacked some traders at the Rawlings Park with machetes, forcing many of the traders to abandon their wares as they fled for safety. The unlucky ones who could not escape sustained injuries.It is unclear whether the attacks stemmed from the simmering tension between supporters of the NPP and NDC over the outcome of the election results.“Some members of our coalition have been beaten mercilessly; some are severely injured and have been hospitalized. Items worth thousands of cedis have been destroyed in this afternoon’s barbaric and dastardly attacks,” according to a release issued on Thursday by the Coalition of Market Women.The traders lament the low sales they recorded on the day as a result of the attacks, especially because “this is a period when we should be making lots of sales as the Christmas season approaches but the conduct of the hoodlums are making us lose a lot of revenue.”
