The Adentan Municipal Assembly represented by Theodora Ackon Mensah has emerged the winner in the recent Greater Accra Regional Reading Competition held at the Accra Central Library. The Municipality beat other 16 Metropolitan, Municipal, District Assemblies (MMDA’s) champions and is to represent the Greater Accra Region in the National Reading Competition to be held later this year. The competition forms parts of activities earmarked for Ghana Library’s 2019 Year of Reading campaign, to instil the culture of reading among Ghanaians. Speaking at the event, the Greater Accra Deputy Regional Minister, Elizabeth Sackey stressed the essence of education especially among children and urged them to always read. “Quality education is needed for the survival of the nation. Books are rich sources for knowledge and information and aids effective communication. When you start reading early at this stage, you would adopt reading as a culture and be able to realize your dreams,” she noted. Commenting on the competition Sackey said, “such activities are needed to motivate pupils in order for them to showcase their talents.” She encouraged parents as stakeholders to guide and teach their children the act of reading by reading with them. On his part, the Greater Accra Regional Librarian, Alikem Tamakloe, stated that “as the public libraries come back to life, all activities to promote reading are coming with it and innovative ways to promote reading are being exploited to scale up reading among Ghanaians, particularly children.” He noted that “Reading for Progress, the theme for the Year of Reading Campaign is an indication that no meaningful progress can take place when reading is relegated.” Mr Alikem advised the pupils to read extensively and acquire knowledge to pass their exams and be able to build a career. He called on all MMDA’s within the Greater Accra Region to continue to assist Ghana Library in promoting literacy in the country. The MMDA’s that partook in the competition were Ga Central, Ga East, Ga West, Ga South, Adentan, La Dade Kotopong, Tema West, Tema Metro, La Kwantanang, Krowor, Kpone Katamanso, Weija Gbawe, Ada East, Ada West, Ledzokuku, Ashaiman and Ningo Prampram. Ghana Library has organized Reading Competitions at the regional level and subsequently, all regional winners will compete for the grand prize at the National Reading Competition to be held in the Greater Accra Region. ”‹
