The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has commended the progress of the Tema Motorway project, describing the work carried out by Maripoma Enterprise Limited as world-class and a testament to Ghanaian capability

During an inspection of the motorway on Tuesday, March 31, Mr Agbodza emphasised the critical timeline of the project and its alignment with the president's major infrastructure agenda.

He said the project’s completion is essential, explaining that the motorway’s timeline is critical to the president's major 2027 agenda and that finishing by August 2027 would align perfectly. He encouraged all stakeholders to give full support to the contractors.

On potential disruptions, he urged swift communication to avoid delays. "If there's anything that will change this, please let Highways know immediately, and we'll take the necessary action to mitigate those challenges," he added.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to local contractors, Mr Agbodza reflected on the president's vision for empowering Ghanaian firms.

He stated that the president's commitment to the project is primarily to provide opportunities for Ghanaian contractors.

He recalled that even when the project was awarded to Mota-Engil under a public-private partnership while they were in opposition, they believed that because the government of Ghana was funding it, the contract should be executed by a local firm.

Praising the standard of work, he insisted it matches international quality. "What we see here is no inferior quality to any contractor from Germany or Britain, China, or anything. This is Ghanaians building their own infrastructure. And that is the point the president is trying to make," he said.

He also highlighted the broader benefits of local involvement, saying, "It retains the value here. It creates an opportunity for us to transfer knowledge amongst ourselves and build the capacity for even bigger things in the future."

Concluding on a positive note, he expressed confidence in the project’s quality. "So we are excited that we haven't seen anything that makes us have a concern in terms of the quality of work. It's as good as any work any contractor globally can do. So we are excited about that," he stated.

The Tema Motorway project forms part of a wider government initiative to modernise road networks while strengthening domestic construction capacity and promoting local expertise.
