A leading member of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Dr Kwame Amoako Tuffuor, says any attempt to disqualify presidential hopeful Alan Kyeremateng from the Party’s presidential primary risk plunging the NPP into mayhem.
Mr Kyeremateng tendered a resignation letter shortly after Nana Akufo Addo won the flagbearer position in the 2007 presidential primary.
After consultations with the leadership of the NPP, he rescinded his decision and rejoined the party.
The NPP’s Constitution requires that members with presidential ambition should be members who have been with the party for a considerable number of years.
Some persons within the party have raised issues with Mr Kyeremateng’s eligibility due to his purported resignation. But Mr Kyeremateng recently said he never resigned from the party.
Dr Amoako-Tuffuor, who supports Nana Addo’s bid for the presidential slot, in an interview on Citi Breakfast show, said the party will be doing itself a great harm if any Constitutional impediments are put in Alan Kyeremateng’s way to frustrate his bid for the flagbearer position as the NPP goes to Congress on July 3 this year.
He cautioned the party to handle such issues with care saying, “we need to handle these things with care. Let us not go back and bring things that would divide us…what is wrong in allowing him to stand for the election, anybody who tries to stop him will be playing a very dangerous role and I think we shouldn’t use this to disqualify him.”
Dr Amoako Tuffour added that “Alan rescinded his decision because at that time we were all upset but he came back and he was part of Nana Addo’s campaign…such a person has played a very significant role and needs to be respected for that”.
