Six persons died on the spot while four others sustained various degrees of injury when an articulated truck with registration number AS 1297 G collided head on with a Kia trailer truck with registration number AS 8798Z.
The two vehicles were reported to be coming from opposite directions when they collided, resulting in the deaths at Diare in the Savelugu-Nanton District of the Northern Region at 10pm on Wednesday.
This accident comes a day after a similar accident claimed 15 lives at Nkenkenso near Akomadan in the Ashanti region, when two Yutong Buses collided.
The four injured persons, according to Chief Inspector Ebenezer Tetteh, Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, were said to be in critical condition and on admission at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, while the dead had been deposited at the morgue.
According to officials of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service, the Kia truck reportedly ran into a pot-hole and burst a front tire and veered off its lane, colliding head on with the articulated truck from the opposite direction.
The articulated truck, according Chief Inspector Tetteh, was travelling from Accra to Bolga while the Kia truck was from Langbinsi in the East Mamprusi District to Kintampo in the Brong Ahafo region when Ihe accident occurred.
The Tamale-Bolgatanga highway, since 2009 has recorded several deadly accidents with dozens of persons dying and others sustaining serious injuries, due to these road accidents.
Drivers and other road users have blamed the situation on the numerous potholes on the highway that have been left unattended to by the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA).
One of such accidents, which occurred on the eve of Valentine's Day in 2009, claimed over 10 lives after an articulated truck collided head-on with a Benz bus at Kadia, close to the latest accident scene.
